Sanitation Services
Overview
The Sanitation Services Unit provides governmental services for businesses and residents. Sanitation administration provides service for all commercial businesses and residential areas, including apartment communities. Our division administers these procedures to the highest standards for our community. The primary purpose and function of the Sanitation Administration is to enforce, maintain and administer the provisions of the City of Riverdale Sanitation Ordinance. This is accomplished through the following activities: analysis and drafting of requested amendments with the assistance of the department Director to the Sanitation Ordinance, processing sanitation applications for commercial and residential customers, processing Residential, Commercial and Construction Site Sanitation, and provide containers. We are charged with evaluating and processing all Sanitation applications and are in contact with the contracted sanitation company to ensure that our community receives great service.

Additional Information
States across the nation are requesting that Municipalities create and implement comprehensive and aggressive new waste management hauling strategies and practices. This is in part to the nation’s movement towards becoming more energy efficient and environmentally responsible.

The shortage of landfill areas, the increase of the incidences of waste pollution is among the key factors that are causing our nation to employ a different approach regarding the nation’s sanitation needs. “Going Green” is no longer a verbal cry; it has become the way of the future.

On December 8, 2008 members of Mayor/Council approved and adopted a new ordinance designed to improve and increase the City’s commercial waste hauling activities. The new ordinance allows only a single commercial sanitation hauling service to operate within the City Limits of Riverdale. The new ordinance went into effect January 1, 2009.

A copy of the ordinance can be obtained by visiting the “Muni-Code” web link which appears on the City’s website. The ordinance is entitled Chapter 62 Article II, Refuse Collection and Disposal Services.

The City of Riverdale and Allied Waste Industries have teamed together to build and maintain a reliable customer focused service. Together, we are committed to providing outstanding service and ensuring that each business receives the ideal waste solution to meet their individual needs.

Waste Collection Service
The versatile containers used in waste collection range in a variety of sizes and are often combined to give customers the right capacity for their waste volumes.

Front-End Loader Waste Services
Front-end loader containers work best for businesses that generate low-density waste materials that can be compacted, such as office waste and food products.

Benefits of Front-End Load containers include:
  • Versatile – containers are available in a variety of sizes to meet individual needs.
  • Sanitary – all waste is kept in a single, closed receptacle unit.
  • Aids pest control – with waste enclosed in a covered steel container, insects, rodents and other pests are less likely to be attracted.
  • Reduces fire hazard – depositing waste in a closed, all-steel container helps diminish the likelihood of accidental fires.
